Smart devices, health apps can improve employees’ wellness

In today’s face-paced business environment, prioritizing employee well-being is imperative. Companies are discovering that healthier, happier employees are more productive, engaged and loyal. Traditional wellness programs aren’t obsolete, but effective programs are incorporating smart devices and health apps for added success.

Workplaces are being transformed by smart devices. Wearables like smartwatches, wellness-tracking rings and other fitness trackers paired with health apps empower employees to monitor their health, track progress and make proactive lifestyle decisions. This savvy technology gives businesses insight to better shape wellness initiatives and optimize health care spending.

Inviting smart wellness tech into the workplace creates a culture that values physical, mental and emotional health, which simultaneously boosts engagement, employee retention and productivity. Encouraging employee health with devices they already own is a business strategy that has measurable returns.

John Joyce, CEO of CRS Technology Consultants, recently shared how technology can help optimize health and wellness with viewers of Gulf Coast News in Fort Myers. During the segment, John breaks down how the devices many people already own can encourage healthier habits.

“It’s about turning something into a tool. That’s what it’s supposed to be,” John said. “The same technology can be great tools to help us make and maintain those smarter choices.”

Enhancing Employee Health

Wearable technology and personal devices like smartphones, watches and rings give employees the ability to monitor their health in real time. From tracking steps and heartrate to analyzing sleep and stress, these devices give users insight to make healthier choices throughout the day.

“Start with what you probably already have – your smartphone, your watch,” said John. “If you bought the watch because you wanted easier notifications, you might not have thought about all the fitness capabilities in it.”

To make wellness tech meaningful in the workplace, businesses can encourage employees to use the devices they already own to promote healthy habits. Here are a few practical ways employers can encourage the use of health tech in the workplace:

  • Wellness Challenges
    • Create friendly challenges for employees to compete throughout the day. Set hydration, step or standing goals that employees can track through their personal devices and compete against each other for a fun prize. Fun competitions like team-based challenges increase motivation and participation while promoting healthy habits
  • Educate Employees
    • Some employees may not know all the features of their devices. Including quick tips or fun tech facts on heart rate monitoring or guided meditation in internal communications may encourage them to use features they were unaware of.
  • Incentivize Engagement
    • Recognize participation in challenges or health-focused activities. Highlighting achievements, like “A Step Above” for the person who got the most steps or showcasing mindfulness streaks in internal communication, creates a sense of accomplishment and community.
  • Push Notifications
    • Encourage employees to use their device notifications for healthy micro-habits – like standing every hour, drinking water or taking a short mindfulness break. These small, tech-supported habits can promote wellness in the workplace and increase productivity.

By helping employees see the wellness-related value in their devices, businesses can support a culture where health and wellness are naturally integrated into routines.

Using Health Apps to Increase Productivity

Health apps can be a valuable asset in promoting employee health and productivity. When paired with smartphones and wearable devices, health apps provide personalized wellness guidance in and out of work. From guide meditation sessions to lower stress to fitness routines and nutrition support to promote physical health, these apps help employees manage their stress, energy and focus levels throughout the day.

Recommend apps that employees can use to promote short breaks throughout the day to encourage mindfulness, like a 5-minute mindfulness exercise during a mid-afternoon break or a quick stretch reminder. The easier it is to integrate into existing workflows, the more likely employees are to engage with the app.

Use apps that integrate social features and peer support. Many apps allow employees to form teams, track progress or share achievements. Businesses can create optional wellness groups, encourage company-wide challenges or recognize milestones in internal communications to build community and motivation.

Drive ROI with Wellness Tech

Employee health initiatives are often viewed as culture investments, but they can also be strategic financial investments, too. By supporting healthier habits, wellness tech can influence several cost and efficiency factors across the organization.

Consistent use of wellness apps and smart devices supports preventative health, which can lead to fewer chronic health issues and fewer medical claims. Over time, this can positively impact employer-sponsored health care costs and insurance premiums.

Healthy employees are less likely to take unplanned sick days and will have increased focus, staying productive while at work. Wellness tools that support sleep, stress management and physical activity help reduce fatigue and burnout, which are major contributors to lost productivity. When heath is a priority, employees’ energy levels are higher, they have better concentration and better decision-making skills. Scaling this across the workplace can generate more efficient work.
