Apple revealed its latest smartphones – the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo – with great anticipation and fanfare. The global announcement came during the company’s “Surprise and Shine” launch event on Sept. 9, 2026.
Apple fanatics worldwide eagerly tuned in to learn about the new devices.
“We made massive advancements in the most important areas: intelligence, performance, battery and camera,” Apple CEO John Termus said in teeing up the product launch.
John Joyce, CEO of CRS Technology Consultants, appeared a few days later on Gulf Coast News to help viewers answer one question: Is now the time to upgrade my smartphone?
To upgrade, or not to upgrade
John appears monthly at Gulf Coast News as a studio guest for Tech Bytes segments. The September Tech Bytes segment focused entirely on Apple’s announcement and what it means for consumers, including businesses.
During his interview, John held up his iPhone 17 Pro Max to illustrate a point.
“There’s not a thing in the world wrong with it,” John says. “The battery still holds over 95% of its charge. It can run every single feature that Apple has released, including the latest Apple Intelligence. It doesn’t stop me from wanting the new thing, but when do we need the new thing?”
That is a question CRS helps businesses, nonprofits and government agencies answer nearly every day. The company encourages its partners to create a replacement cycle for all electronic devices, generally following these timeframes:
- Smartphones: 3-4 years
- Desktop Computers: 4-5 years
- Laptops: 4-5 years
- Tablets: 4-5 years
Other devices, like monitors, printers, webcams and computer accessories, can have prolonged lifespans because that technology does not evolve as rapidly.
Five key considerations when deciding to upgrade to a newer smartphone include the following:
- If the battery no longer holds a charge.
- If the device slows or has extended lag times.
- If apps or software programs close unexpectedly.
- If the device regularly shuts down for no apparent reason.
- If the budget allows.
For businesses, consideration No. 5 is critical and points back to the importance of outlining a replacement cycle. Electronics represent significant capital purchases for organizations of any size. Budgeting can – and should – be a multiyear process.
With any major investment – new office furniture, vehicles, real estate or technology – evaluating “want” vs. “need” must be part of the deliberation.
The iPhone 18 announcement
As noted above, Apple released details of three new smartphones: iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Duo. Two have names very familiar to iPhone users. The third, though, might be a game changer for the iconic brand.
“We’ve got a new iPhone to talk about, which is maybe the first time ever,” John says. “If we go all the way back to the first iPhone, now almost 20 years ago, it’s been iterations on the same theme, but it’s been more or less the same shape. Sure, it’s gotten bigger and the screen has changed, but it’s the same slab phone that we’ve known for a couple decades now.”
The iPhone Duo is Apple’s first foldable smartphone. It’s a passport-sized smartphone when closed and resembles an iPad mini when opened.
“Apple has brought out something completely new to its users,” John says. “Foldables are not new; they’ve been around six or seven years at this point.”
Samsung debuted its Galaxy Fold way back in 2019. While delays build anticipation, seven years is a lifetime with technology. iPhone loyalists have been buzzing about this alternative for years, though, and buzz generally drives sales.
Apple’s news release announcing the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max touted the signature device’s impressive leaps. Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing, reiterated Termus’ excitement for the new lineup.
“We took huge leaps forward to create the best Pro iPhone we’ve ever made,” he said. “iPhone 18 Pro makes it easy for anyone to capture stunning photos and videos using variable aperture, while providing more versatility for creators and more control for pros. Paired with impactful upgrades to Photographic Styles and powerful video capabilities, iPhone 18 Pro unlocks entirely new ways for users to express themselves.”
One item not discussed at the Surprise and Shine event also caught John Joyce’s eye. The iPhone 18 – the standard model sold at the lowest price point – was not even mentioned.
“It’s as much about what wasn’t there as what was there,” John notes. “Apple did not announce a mainline iPhone. For the first time ever, we’re expecting to see the true iPhone 18 come out in a few months, but this month was all about these Pro series phones and these new foldables, so it’s the upper end of the market. They got a little bit more expensive and they’ve got new features.”
The decision to release the Pro and Pro Max models first likely is a marketing and sales strategy. By only offering the more expensive options initially, Apple will generate more revenue. When the standard, lower-priced iPhone 18 becomes available, demand will have subsided.
Specs: Breaking down the new iPhones
The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max have several notable improvements over prior models. They come with Apple Intelligence with Siri AI, and phones can answer questions based on activity stored on your own phone. The camera is significantly better and devices feature superior photo editing capabilities. Battery life, a common complaint of smartphone users, is much better. A new chip delivers faster performance and response.

Investing in new technology
Businesses that invest in new technology are investing in their employees and the company’s future. The list of standard-issue technology for many businesses includes these devices: computers, keyboards, printers, copy machines, webcams, selfie lighting, landlines and more. Smartphones aren’t always included, but employees increasingly rely on cellphones to carry out their job duties.
Many occupations would benefit from the features available on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max.
Sales reps, field service technicians, construction managers and real estate agents would appreciate the longer battery life for days spent away from a plug. Social media specialists and public relations managers, and even photographers and videographers, could capture high-resolution images and videos to share with target audiences. Corporate executives, account managers and event planners whose time is literally money could move quickly and efficiently with faster smartphones. Even those who struggle to keep up with so many texts, emails and Slack messages could take advantage of Siri AI’s ability to comb through your entire phone’s contents to answer questions unique to you.
No matter the industry, all organizations rely on technology. Is now the time to upgrade your devices?
